Govt to open new medical super speciality courses

BHUBANESWAR: The state government has decided to open new medical super speciality (DM/MCh) courses in the three government-run medical colleges and Acharya Harihar Regional Cancer Centre (AHRCC), Cuttack, government sources said. It plans to add 37 more DM (doctorate of medicine) and MCh (master of churgery) seats, increasing total post doctoral medical seats in state to 61 from the current 24. The state government has directed principals of the three medial colleges and director of AHRCC to apply for the new courses and seat hike to Medical Council of India (MCI), it said.

Currently, only SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack offers the three-year post doctoral medical degree in 10 various departments with an annual intake capacity of 24. The government plans to increase seats in eight departments and start new courses in nine others.

According to the government, SCB will launch DM/MCh courses in nephrology, neurology, gastroenterology, haepatology, pulmonary medicine, neurosurgery, surgical gastroenterology, plastic surgery and paediatric surgery with an annual intake capacity of two each. Similarly, it plans to admit one student each in cardiac anaesthesia, neuro anaesthesia, critical care, cardiothorasic and vasculary surgery and urology.

The AHRCC would start PG and post doctoral teaching in medical oncology, surgical oncology, gyanecological oncology, head and neck oncology with an intake capacity of one in each course. Similarly, VSS Medical College and Hospital, Burla and MKCG Medical College and Hospital, Berhampur too will start post doctoral medical degree courses.
